For thirty minutes before the ceremony begins, prelude music is played. This is often played on an organ at church services but any number of instruments can be used.

Processional music is played as the wedding party enters the ceremony. The organ plays a fantastic bridal march. Other instruments sound spectacular, as well. As a note, many religious institutions will not allow non-religious music (secular music) at the ceremony. Be sure to find out before you choose your music.

Throughout the ceremony, music and singing can occur. Appropriate times for music may be when the mothers are being seated and during the lighting of the Unity candle. You may want a vocalist to sing up to four songs. Talk to the person marrying you on how many songs will be played and when they will occur.

Recessional music plays as the wedding party leaves the church and the music continues while guests are leaving. This is called the postlude. At the reception you will want background music during the cocktail hour and dinner. Many types of music is suitable for this time. Jazz, violins, classical, new age, piano and easy listening are all appropriate. Many different singers and musicians can be utilized during this time. When the wedding party enters the reception choose music that indicates something significant. If you want the crowd to dance choose music that they would like to dance to.
